In his New York Times Article titled "Too Small To Fail", Nicholas Kristof writes about the need to support families living in poverty to improve their children's developmental trajectory. Kristof reminds us that "what’s needed is not just education but also help for families beginning in pregnancy, to reduce the risk that children will be born with addictions and to increase the prospect that they will be raised with lots of play and conversation. (By age 4, a child of professionals has heard 30 million more words than a child on welfare.)" We echo his understanding of the needs and encourage professionals in our field to identify children with developmental and behavioral concerns early - before age 3 - and provide IDA developmental assessment to determine the levels and areas of delay, and to assure connection to needed support and intervention services.
